How Loved Are You?

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on…

Supper at Emmaus

Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose…

A Sermon on the Good Samaritan

“Just then an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”      He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?”        He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”      And he said to him,…

Conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,…

Chasing Ghosts

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and…

An Angel Unawares

As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he…

Easter Sunday – Deep Dawning

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! They say that while circling the earth in outer space you can see an arched line that can only be described as earth’s deep dawn; light slowly emerging from sheer darkness. No one has seen it with their eyes, unless it’s been from outer space, looking back. It’s hard to imagine an actual line… yet it is very real… I am sure there is such a thing as deep, deep dawn for each…

A Piece of Jesus’ Mind

[In our gospel lesson today, we hear of a woman anointing Jesus’ feet. This isn’t the only time it happens in the gospels. Luke is the only one who doesn’t put this well-remembered story immediately before Jesus’ passion. This story comes in the first third of Luke’s gospel, and with good reason. He doesn’t put it so close to Jesus’ death that we make the connection between the anointing and the preparation for burial. Rather, Luke places the event in…

Bound to be Loosed

We have come together on this Sabbath Day, drawn somehow by God’s goodness… and God meets us here, freeing us, at least momentarily, of that which binds us and holds us back. In this Sabbath time together, when we intentionally name and claim God’s love for us- we also recognize ways in which the gifts we have been given are not being used as fully as they could be… That God’s Spirit could help unbind us from that which keeps us from ling more fully as Jesus would have us live…. to become more fully the people God has made us to be…

Jesus, the Desert, and You

Jesus is not going to be distracted by the daring, the intriguing or the spectacular. He can’t be bought off with food, he can’t be bribed with high office; he can’t be distracted by entertainment. He can’t be put off from his purpose. That’s strength you can count on, even in your wilderness.
