Adult educational programs involve study of the faith, Bible exploration, Christian life in society, and other topics.
Our Adult Sunday School takes place on Sunday mornings during the Christian Education hour in the Westcott Room from September through May. Come at 9:45 AM for coffee and a chance to catch up with friends or make new acquaintances. Then at 10 AM we settle in for discussions based on that Sundays Bible text and led primarily by lay leaders among the congregation. It’s a format that draws on the gifts not only of lay leaders but of listeners who contribute to the discussion. We all are learners. Additionally, we periodically hold special seminar series on a range of Biblical and contemporary topics. For more information, contact Amy Carlson, our director of Christian Formation and Congregational Life.
Candlelighters – Women’s Study Group
This small group is for women who are searching for a place to nurture their spiritual life and get to know other women at Second Presbyterian. They generally meet on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 PM in the Westcott Room of the church during the school year. The group has focused on topics including feminine power in our lives and in the Bible, gun violence, and Barbara Brown Taylor’s book, Learning to Walk in the Dark. For more information, contact Amy Carlson, our director of Christian Formation and Congregational Life.
Disciple Bible Study
The Disciple format combines Bible study and the fellowship of a small group. Each “year” includes both Old and New Testament readings which participants prepare at home from a study manual. Meetings begin with prayer and a video and engage in lively discussion. Some groups have been meeting for many years, and periodically new groups are formed.
The Bible Guys
This Bible study group for men meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7 AM in the Westcott Room. The group has been focusing discussion on Old Testament books. The Rev. Dr. Tom Blair leads the group. Contact him for more information.
Mission Book Group
The Mission Book group generally meets monthly on a Wednesday evening at 7 pm in the Church’s Westcott Room, though the week varies. The group discusses books, both fiction and non-fiction, that focus on issues of social justice and the stories of people for whom we direct our mission work such as immigrants and the poor, but whose experiences we often don’t really know. By reading these stories, we build understanding and empathy for people whom society tends to label as “other” or “less than.” Contact Rev. Jenn DiFrancesco for more information.
Tapas, Talk and Theology
This Bible study group usually meets every other Friday at 7 PM in member homes except during the summer. The format is a light supper followed by a video lecture and group discussion. Discussion series have included examination of the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, the Book of John and the Psalms. Contact Rebecca Ferrell for more information.
Tuesdays at Ten
This Bible study group features Scripture-based video presentations and discussions based on the video contents and participants’ weeklong personal home studies. The group meets every Tuesday at the church in the Seminar Room near the Chapel. Sessions begin at 10 AM, and last for about 1 1/2 hours. Everyone is invited to join the group, participate in the discussions, and enjoy the wonderful Christian fellowship always present at our meetings. For more information, contact Gene Haupt.
